The Haunted House That Haunted the Neighborhood.

Every October, I start hearing stories from other planners and decorators about clients who go all in for Halloween — the bigger the skeleton, the better.

And honestly? I love the enthusiasm. There’s something magical about people who want to turn their homes into full-blown holiday experiences. But sometimes, the excitement takes a spooky turn.

One of my favorite (and funniest) stories this year came from a fellow planner who helped a family stage what was supposed to be the “ultimate spooky yard.”

We’re talking twelve-foot skeletons climbing the roof, fog machines set on timers, and eerie red lights glowing in every window. It was cinematic — a scene straight out of a haunted mansion movie.

At first, everything looked incredible. Neighbors were impressed, cars slowed down to take pictures, and even the local paper snapped a few shots. But as night fell, things took a twist.

The neighborhood kids refused to walk past the house. Parents started crossing the street during trick-or-treating. And one bold neighbor even left a note asking if the family could “tone it down before bedtime.”

The family loved their masterpiece — but by the end of the week, they realized their haunted house had actually haunted the neighborhood.

Lesson Learned

When it comes to décor — especially for holidays that attract little ones — balance is everything.

Big, bold ideas are fantastic, but they should invite joy, not jump scares. The goal is to make memories, not nightmares.

If you’re planning a spooky (or sparkly!) holiday setup this year, consider bringing in a decorator who can help strike that balance — someone who knows when to say, “Let’s wow them… without terrifying them.”

Pro Tip:
If your neighbor’s yard looks like a zombie takeover, maybe just take a mini vacation and come back in time for Thanksgiving!

Takeaway

Holiday décor should make people smile, not sprint. A touch of creativity goes a long way — but a touch of restraint keeps the spirit bright.
